Abstract of the Article: “Vibrancy and Livability of City Centers”
This article addresses the growing concerns about the future of many urban centers in the United Kingdom and examines the factors that contribute to assessing and understanding their ongoing health. Recognizing that previous studies have tended to focus on the relative functional values among cities, this paper presents an approach for analyzing at a micro level, distinguishing between both relative and absolute functions of different areas within individual city centers. The research uses key indicators of city center vibrancy and livability, as outlined in recent government planning guides, and applies case study data to develop a time-series model for tracking changes in the health of various areas within a city center. Although the predictive capacity of this model is currently limited due to the lack of suitable data, the article demonstrates that simple relative measures of vibrancy and livability can serve as useful tools for understanding the dynamic and changing health of city centers.
